You can solve this problem by using a Boyer or similar ignition that wastes a spark on the exhaust stroke, but the other concern I had is that a bar mounted tach looks out of place on a bike that was essentially designed in 1955, and there are few options that will fit the bullet cassette nacelle. Only the tachometer and installation hardware is included in the offer the rest of the parts are going back on my fireball. It can be easily made to fit in the dash by enlarging the stock opening about all the way around. I included pictures of the installation, and the entire process took me about 30 minutes using a common dreamily tool and 1/2 coarse sander drums.

I now have several to offer to fellow enfield riders who are facing the same problem. The problem is that a points ignition, single cylinder motorcycle engine fires one time for every two piston strokes intake exhaust where a twin fires on every stroke 1, as there is always a piston headed for DC. As an enfield rider I was disappointed to find that almost every tachometer sold for motorcycles was made for twins, and there's nothing decent on the market for singles. I took the nacelle off the bike, but it can be done in place and might actually be easier than trying to hold it and remove material at the same time.

Following tom Lyons' excellent blog for the fireball bullet groups, I noticed that several riders had fitted mm b units, and that they looked very compatible with vintage smith's gauges. I do have two units with the white face and black lettering if you're trying to match the enfield classic instruments. Made in germany brand new mini tachometer to fit royal enfield bullet. Please be advised that this is not the perfect solution, as it will not drop right into the opening for the enfield ignition key, but it is an excellent option and a high quality instrument that can be programmed to correctly read PMS on singles and twins and others as well.

A twin tachometer will read half the actual rpm on a single, and I didn't care to do the math while riding.
